We gave the same 10 tasks to three groups: prompt engineers, developers with basic prompting skills, and developers with no prompting training.
The Results
The developers with basic prompting skills performed within 5% of the dedicated prompt engineers. The untrained developers were 40% behind.
What This Means
The skill floor for effective AI usage is much lower than the industry wants you to believe. You don't need a "prompt engineer" — you need developers who spend 2 hours learning the basics.
